If you have young kids you'll know that DVDs don't last very long before getting scratched, smudged or otherwise rendered unfit for playing.
One of the best solutions is to convert your DVDs to video files and play them on a computer or media player like the WDTV or the Apple TV.

Handbrake is the only application I have found which will consistently convert DVDs to video files ( MP4 is the best format so far ) without hanging, crashing or requiring a dozen steps to start each DVD.
